It’s a legitimate question since everyone seems to fall into depression when you tell them Photoshop costs, erm, a whole lot more money than any of us just has lying around. So if Photoshop is not an option do I hang or shoot myself. Well, neither option is as good as GIMP. According to its developers…
GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc.
GIMP is expandable and extensible. It is designed to be augmented with plug-ins and extensions to do just about anything. The advanced scripting interface allows everything from the simplest task to the most complex image manipulation procedures to be easily scripted. GIMP is written and developed under X11 on UNIX platforms. But basically the same code also runs on MS Windows andMac OS X.
So, all you have to do is download it, and rewire your brain in such a way that it forgets defaulting back to Photoshop (which is absolutely fabulous but also expensive as hell). Is GIMP really a free version of Photoshop? Well, some say it is, others say it isn’t. Every designer has a different take on what GIMP really is and how comparable is to Adobe’s PS. I however say it’s an absolutely fantastic piece of software for zero money, so yeah, go for it!
